Holmes Brothers

The Holmes brothers are an electrifying vocal and instrumental band from Christchurch, Virginia. In the Ark, they sizzled the stage with their high impact soul, gospel and R&B melodies. Their guitar licks cut the cool air and their singing was loud inside my ear even after I left the place. The words they sang were existential; with feelings of gratitude and sometimes an attempt to encapsulate of moment of the times we live today. Soul was a flower that bloomed in all the songs. They interpretted two beautiful Beatles' numbers. "And I love you" was stripped down to the bare bones and architected with a blues foundation that was melancholy and sophisticated. It was during the tender moments when the guitar melody gave way that you could fathom the turn about for this song. Brother Popsy's geometrically intriguing salt and pepper beard is something to rave about; Brother Sherman was the bass bodhisatva with feet tapping and eyes wide shut while Brother Mervin stitched the evening together with finesse and fiery.
